ORCA: Mapping Pollution and Finding Solutions for our Indian River Lagoon

A problem cannot be solved until it is fully understood. The reduced biodiversity, decreased quality of life, and economic threat that affect all of us along the Indian River Lagoon cannot be attributed to a single cause.

ORCA has worked for the past 15 years to develop methods needed to assess and monitor the lagoon in an effort to understand its problems. And we are now leveraging the work we are doing by training citizen scientists.

The goal of the Pollution Mapping Citizen Science Project is to quickly identify pollution sinks and hotspots by assessing the accumulation of nutrients and toxins in sediment and water samples throughout the lagoon. Utilizing further analyses and our new integrative samplers, we then aim to track the exact source of pollutants to stop further eutrophication.

About The Ocean Research & Conservation Association: ORCA is dedicated to the protection and restoration of aquatic ecosystems and the species they sustain through the development of innovative technology, science-based conservation action and community education and outreach. As the nation’s first technology-based marine conservation organization, ORCA’s niche in responding to large-scale deterioration of the marine environment is to: Collect accurate and scientifically defensible data on water quality and its impact on the marine ecosystems; Provide the data to the public and decision makers in an easily understandable format; And engage communities in marine conservation action. By combining innovative technology, applied science, and community outreach, ORCA is leading the way in protection and conservation of our valuable coast, estuaries and oceans—saving these precious habitats for the generations of tomorrow. www.teamorca.org
